Asbestos Lung Cancer

Asbestos is a natural mineral that consists of tiny fibers and under certain conditions can generate dust. Dust containing asbestos fibers can be inhaled into the lungs through the breathing process, which will continue to stay there for decades.

Almost all people are believed to have been exposed to asbestos although at a lower rate. But there are some people who have a long-term risk of exposure to asbestos is higher than others. They are the people who work in :
-. Asbestos mining
-. Asbestos factory or factories whose products using asbestos materials
-. Workers and crusher building, if the building using asbestos materials.

Asbestos and lung cancer
Just as smoking can cause lung cancer, long-term exposure to asbestos can also cause lung cancer. A smokers who are exposed to asbestos have a risk of developing lung cancer is higher. Have not found valid data of lung cancer patients in Indonesia, but it is believed there was an increase of 20% of cases annually.

There are two main types of lung cancer :

-. Small cell lung carcinoma - have a strong association with smoking
-. Small cell lung carcinoma - consists of three main forms .

Three forms of non-small cell lung carcinoma is :

-. Squamous cell carcinoma - begins in large airways, called bronchi
-. Large cell carcinoma - similar to squamous cell carcinoma
-. Adenocarcinoma - a form of lung cancer is the most common . Usually begins in the peripheral lung tissue.

Asbestos and mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a cancer that is quite rare but rapidly spreading. Mesothelioma is almost always associated with asbestos exposure incident. This cancer is emerging around 30-40 years after exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma is caused mainly due to the high level of use of asbestos and asbestos mining activities over the years.

Mesothelioma usually starts from the membrane that wraps around the lungs, called the pleura. Cancer cells cause a buildup of fluid between the pleura and the lungs, which in turn will lead to pressure on the lungs. The symptoms are shortness of breath and cough that hurts. As it grows, mesothelioma can grow well in the chest wall and sometimes also can develop in the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum), the lining of the heart or reproductive organs.

Diagnosing lung cancer and mesothelioma
There are several types of checks that can be done to check for lung cancer and mesothelioma, among others :

-. X - ray : either using standard X-ray or CT scan (which produces three- dimensional images of the chest ).
-. Sputum cytology tests : examination of sputum (sputum), because lung cancer cells can sometimes also be found in the sputum.
-.  Biopsy : taking a small sample of lung cells with a special tool, the patient will get anesthesia (anesthesia) in local or general.
-.  Other tests : such as examination of the bones, liver or brain scans, and blood tests, to see whether cancer cells have spread to other body parts.

Treatment  lung cancer and mesothelioma
As lung cancer and mesothelioma is often only diagnosed after development has been far, so it is sometimes difficult to treat. However, with the increasing number of cancer research and treatment technology is getting better, then every case still has hope of a cure. Treatment of lung cancer and mesothelioma include :

-. Surgery or surgery - to remove the tumor
-. Radiotherapy - uses X-rays to kill cancer cells
-. Chemotherapy - using anti- cancer drugs to kill cancer cells.
